Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the goal of Kickstart STEM?

A: We aim to teach students in grades K-5 valuable lessons in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and to inspire these students through fun project-based classes to pursue prosperous STEM careers in the future.

Q: What kind of classes does Kickstart STEM offer?

A: Kickstart STEM offers STEM, Scratch, and Python classes (and a number of upcoming courses). STEM classes include hands-on activities such as the marshmallow-and-spaghetti tower-building challenge, dynamic bridge construction, aeronautic modeling, and electrical circuits. Our Scratch class is designed to introduce students to the universal language of coding, and the Python class is designed to build upon these basic coding fundamentals to improve students’ practical coding proficiency.

Q: What is the frequency of Kickstart STEM courses?

A: We hold our courses in the fall, winter, and spring sessions. Our courses are 6-week sessions that meet once a week after school.

Q: Is Kickstart STEM affordable?

A: While Kickstart STEM is extremely affordable, do not mistake this affordability for a lack of quality. Part of our mission is to open up the opportunity of STEM education for all K-5 students who would like it. So, we only charge $150 per 8-week session, with the exception of $180 per 8-week session for our 3D Engineering course.

Q: Who teaches the classes at Kickstart STEM?

A: Kickstart STEM classes are taught by current Wellesley High School students who are passionate about STEM, teaching, and leadership.

Q: What do parents say about Kickstart STEM?

A: Many parents have praised Kickstart STEM for being a wonderful program that their children have loved. They particularly appreciate that the program is taught by high-school students who their children can look up to, both in terms of academic passion and social skills.

Q: Who is behind this?

A: The Wellesley High School graduates who lead Kickstart STEM have pursued studies in Artificial Intelligence, Biochemistry, Economics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Mathematics at CMU and Tufts. Our Wellesley High School Chief Coordinators, the on-the-ground personnel, are current WHS students who take the charge to build a strong group of teachers for our students’ enrichment.
